Strategies to Overcome Reading Problem

Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village and we'll be looking at correcting common problems in children. Common problems with young readers. What can you do when you come to a word you don't know? I like using a swatter, that's easy and let's say they don't know what the word big is. Swat it and let's try it. B-ig. Can you swat it again? Big. Something as simple as this. It makes all the difference in the world that the child will all the sudden learn the word because they're swatting it, they're having fun with the word and then pretty soon they won't be swatting that word anymore. And what can you do, some more strategies when you come to a word you don't know? Look at the first letter; B-what does B sound like? We've done our alphabet charts and posters, B-ig. Look at the first letter, get your mouth ready. You're going to say the letter B-B. You're going to say the letter T-T, differently so make sure that you show them B is get your mouth ready; B and look at my lips, look at how I'm pronouncing the words. Say the sound B-B. Look for patterns; big, pig, fig. There's the ig sound. What else for literation goes with the letter B? Does it look like a word you know? And that's why repetition in a lot of the books are so important, they repeat the words over and over. Can you take off any endings of the word? Look at the word to make it make more sense. Just a few strategies and things to say to your children if you're noticing any types of common problems there in that concept.
