Reading Problems & Robotic Reading

Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village and we'll be looking at correcting common reading problems in children. Strategies to overcome common problems, we looked at a lot of common problems in young readers. This problem is a child reads in a robotic way. Robotic monotone, no emotion, no feeling, and it almost sounds as if they're struggling. Example; Let me in or I will blow your house down. Can you read this quickly is the first thing you ask. They can try it. If they can't read it quickly, then you have to work on fluency with them, you have got to work on things like; in for example the I Spy book. Where they give you lots of great examples of saying that, hat, rat, cat. Take 5 words at a time, can we say it faster? It really helps them learn to think and judge and everything else. It's important fluency, can we read this quicker? Sometimes that helps. Can you make it sound like you are talking? So important, it distinguishes characters, it distinguishes people, it distinguishes stories, it helps them with judging later in life, how to have good judgment. Let me in or I will blow your house down. Let them have fun. If you've done enough games and activities and played with your child, this will become easier. So if they do read in a robotic way, you need to be working on that with some of the techniques I just showed you and going back to some of the lessons that we had in each session.
