Questions & AnswersHi! This is John on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this video clip, I will be talking about cleaning the weld bead. One of the best ways to tell if you have made a good weld, is to clean off the slag coating that is covering your weld. Again with arc welding, the electrode leaves this slag coating on top to help protect the weld, so I am going to just take a chipping hammer and I am going to hit the slag. If the slag comes off easily, that means I made a good weld. If I really have to pound at the slag to get it off, that means I might need to practice a little more. Once you have knocked the slag coating off, you can take a wire brush and clean it and then inspect your weld.

I really like this series of video and he is very through on all aspects of preparation, safety, welding equipment, usage and techniques. I would like if he could on this part of the video if he tilted the piece or zoomed in for a close up on the piece after he tapped off the slag to show the finish weld would look and go into more details of what he meant by inspect the weld? Other than that I fully enjoyed the entire series of videos. Great!!!
I really enjoyed this series on Arc Welding. Knowing zero about the subject before hand, I feel that John has taught me enough that I feel comfortable to sit down with a welder and practice the arc welding technique.
This series is pretty good, lots of details and I like John's sytle. He is a little stiff but I like his all-business approach and the nitty-gritty about weld quality, how to end and how to clean up. I would have like to hear more about that 6013 electrode and others, maybe what that code means. Great job.
