Non-Normative Chords: Advanced Music Theory & Songwriting
Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com and we are going to be talking about advanced theory in song writing. Now the other half of chords that we could use in a song are called non-normative chords and all that means is that they use notes that are not in the scale; C scale, no sharps and flats. We would have to use some sharps and flats in the key of C to get some chords that are non-normative, not normal. There are two primary kinds and one is chords that we will call them secondary motion chords which are chords that push us towards another chord. In the key of C, the most important chord is the C and when we want to hit home base, we do this, which is a C; you can feel that is home. But when we want to briefly push us towards another chord, we would use one of these non-normative chords.
