Chords: Advanced Music Theory & Songwriting
Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com and we are going to be talking about the advanced theory in song writing. So here is an E minor; here is an E minor 7, in many ways we play these chords on guitar. Here is an E minor 9; here is an E minor 2; check out this tension. These notes are jammed up on top of each other with tension, very sad sound and that is good. And then here is another way on the guitar; here is a minor E minor 11 and listen to each of these sounds…. I just wanted to say that for example, if I am going you know it always comes in mind though… that is little Hebrew song, this complicated chord. It does not fit, it is too complicated, and it is too thoughty. We need something little more straight forward. You know this is a sad sound, straight forward, this is a more complicated sound, just talking about that language idea. So these are some of these other chords, here is our 7… C chord… C7… C9…, here we will augment to third and the 9, short 9 and augmented… stood up here to make this. Well this is a cool sound, but it only works in certain sounds. My only point in talking to you now about these different colors and additional tones that we can add to the sounds is to say that they are very cool and they basically make you more, more musician and more interesting and all that kind of stuff but on the other hand you got to step back and say, what is my audience going to do with this, are they going to appreciate that more complicated sound, are they going to love that flat 9… are they going to be cool, are they going to think you know you are playing jazz but that is a consideration.
