Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com and we are going to be talking about advanced theory in song writing. When it comes to chords, there are basically three kinds of chords or three uses of chords. There is basically major chords, there is minor chords and we will use a small letter for that and there is dominant chords, which are you might know them as seven chords. Now a major chord typically does not have to be happy, but I am going to use the word happy, I would see it more as complete rather than happy, but it is a happy sound. A minor cord, must be the whole thing, typically you will call it as a sad sound and a dominant seven chord, we will call that basically, I will call that a motion chord, a chord that wants to move somewhere and I am going to illustrate that for you real quick. Okay here is a C major chord… here is a C minor chord… sad sound, and here is a C7 chord... and what you notice is that chord does not want to stay there, now check out where it wants to go, check this out… you probably agree with me that this is tension, C7 and this is resolution, you basically let that chord to go where it wants to go.
