Chords & Emotions: Advanced Music Theory & Songwriting

Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com and we are going to be talking about advanced theory in song writing. There are two ways that the chords give us emotions and one is the chord itself, and for example, here is a chord, it is a C major chord, alright and here is a C major 7 chord and check out one note is added. I am just talking about the change in mood now; you made it gentler, it made it a little prettier. Here is a C2 chord and that is pretty without being quite as gentle. I am going to grab my guitar here and make the same point. I just want you to see on the guitar here, so here is the C chord, here is a C major 7, a gentler sound is that one note added now, you know now I am talking about butterflies and I love you, here is a C2 chord… pretty and it could be gentle but it is not quite as gentle as the major 7. So right here I am just talking about chord language and what is communicating. Here is a C7 we stepped out of the pretty now, a C9 and what is this, this is a kind of a funky sound and bluesy sound, these kind of words and the mood has changed because I have made this, here is a C minor chord… C minor with the major 7… C minor 7… not teaching these chords to you, I am saying notice how the different just one little note, one little change affects the mood; the mood is being changed. So there is one way that is I am talking about the chord itself, just one change in the chord okay, one note changes and the chord mood changes.
