Hi, I'm Mandy Butler on behalf of Expert Village. I'm going to take you through a gymnastics class stretch and warm-up. Now I'm going to extend my legs sideways from my butterfly stretch into a straddle position. I'm going to straighten my legs, my knees are going to be facing the ceiling. I'm going to scoot my bottom forward to make sure that my legs are spread as wide as they can be so I'm really stretching these muscles right here. Notice, again, my toes are pointed, my knees are facing the ceiling. I'm not rotating my hips forward creating unnecessary stress on my legs. I'm going to keep my chest nice and tight and I'm going to be facing forward. I'm not turning my body any direction. I have my arms up above my head. Now I'm going to turn my torso without hunching my back over. I'm going to keep a nice flat back, turn my torso, and reach toward my toes, looking at my knee. It's important that you look toward your knee to get the optimum stretch. So, I'm going to face forward and reach. You want to hold any stretch for at least 20 seconds so your muscles actually get to stretch. I'm going to hold this for 20 seconds, get up, turn to the side and do the same thing. You want to hold any stretch for 20 seconds to get the effect you're trying to get. Arms up with a nice flat back. I'm going to relax my arms a little and flex my feet, turn, and do the same thing. Straight knees, my toes are facing the ceiling. This really stretches out my calves. Remember, eyes on the knees so you really get the stretch you're trying for. 20 seconds, arms up, turn my torso, and do it again. And, arms up. That's the straddle stretch.
