How to Promote Your Music in Magazines

FREDERICK BURCHELL: Hello. My name is Frederick "Ricky B." Burchell with B4 Entertainment on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're going to talk about producing, manufacturing, marketing and distributing your independent CD. All right. Now let's talk about magazines. Magazines are another important thing when you're marketing your product. But what you want to do is find--in the genre of music that you do, find out what magazines cover those. All right, you don't want to put your CD on advertising in a magazine that doesn't have these types of musics that you do or is not in your genre. You don't want to take a country artist and put it in a rap magazine or you won't take a rap artist and put it in a heavy metal magazine because the genres--people, when they're looking at a rap magazine, they're not looking for country so you just wasted your money. What you want to do if you're a rap artist or if you're a country artist and you're doing that type of music, you want to find a magazine that covers your genre of music then place ads in there, 'cause so many times, like I said, consumers are shopping in or they're flipping through the pages and then they see the cover or they see your advertising in a-- they see a web site or they see "In stores now" or listen to it or "featuring this hit single" and then they remember, "Oh okay, that is so and so. I heard that song on the radio. I want to go to the store and buy it." And then they have an example of your artwork and so when they go on the store, they know what the CD looks like. They know the cover. They know what to be expecting when they go to buy the record so it's so important to get on magazines. Then there's a thing called now--on the Internet, it's called ezines, almost the same thing as magazines. They have information. They cover all genres of music and you can get on there, place banners, place ads and get reviews--get a review in the magazine. What another thing you could do is when--you can call to place an ad, ask them and inquire about "How can I get my CD reviewed in your magazine?" That also helps when people see it, it gets like--I know some rating systems have four mikes, four stars or whatever. And the higher the stars, then people like, "Man I wonder really what the record sounds like?" And then that's something you can use when you're marketing. You say, "Hey, I got four stars, three stars, or whatever in this magazine."
