Losing Weight to Reduce Fatigue Symptoms

DR. SUSAN JEWELL: Hello there. My name is Dr. Susan Jewell and on behalf of Expert Village today, I'm going to talk to you about fatigue and how to reduce the symptoms of fatigue. Now, in this clip, we're going to talk about several different ways to address this particular condition. Now, number one contributing factor, I think, to fatigue is obesity and overweight. Now, when you are overweight, you're going to put a lot more stress on your body. You're going to use a lot more energy when you do the most simple tasks, so my advice is to lose weight, and to make sure that your body weight is within your height and your framework of your body or your BMI, your body mass index; that's a medical way to actually see that you are within your recommended body weight. So, losing weight is a good thing to try to overcome the symptoms of fatigue. Having a good night sleep because that's important to get at least six to seven hours of quality sleep; it's not the amount of sleep, it's the quality of sleep. 'Cause some people who have even four to five hours of very good quality sleep with no disturbances, no waking up in between, actually can function really well, and still have more energy throughout the day. So, it's the quality, not the quantity of sleep. And also, don't overwork. Don't burn the candles at both ends. You need to know when to stop and to get your sleep because that's so important. Your body needs to regenerate, and most of that time that happens in your body when you are asleep, that body reenergizes and regenerates. So sleep is important. Now, another way to overcome fatigue syndrome is to breathe properly. Now, there are breathing techniques that you can learn how to breathe properly. It's amazing how that most of us do not know how to breathe properly. Most people use only their--incorrectly breathe by using only their neck muscles to breathe instead the diaphragm where if you use your diaphragmatic muscles, you can actually inhale a lot of oxygen into your body into your lungs, and that would help you to circulate and get oxygen and reduce the fatigue. Now, so you can go learn about breathing techniques. Another thing is to avoid alcohol and smoking because alcohol is a sedative, and also smoking reduces the oxygen in your body. And another thing to learn is called circadian rhythm, which is a natural, biological clock that you should learn to recognize and to address. These are some of the ways to find to alleviate the symptoms of fatigue.
