Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com and we are going to be talking about advanced theory in song writing. The melody, which is again the notes, the most important notes of your song being imagine them as if they are played by an instrument rather than with words. Only reason is that the words add meaning and we want to consider the melody without meaning. This isn’t cool…You want to think about that, is that beautiful, is that exciting? You know if we go…. so that is the melody for I have been waiting for a girl like you that is an interesting line, somewhere over the rainbow … very dramatic, which is a contrast in range. We can hold notes long, we can use dissonance and for example I am not trying to pick on or do bunch of Broadway stuff or whatever, but that chord has that dissonance and another song comes in mind, another Broadway song; please don’t check out on me because that is Maria. This is a dissonance Maria I just…… that is a dissonance and you want to resolve and your ear goes, I hear that. So a song that comes to mind that is not like that is… I mean that is like that but it is not a Broadway tune, it is an incubus. It is much easier to run, taking the… I do not know the words because we are talking about the melody so that is an interesting melody, there is dissonance in there, dissonance in those other examples and that make to ear go, ooh! That has got my attention.
