Using Exfoliators for Skin Care

HARMONIE KRIEGER: So now we're moving on to the exfoliator. As I described in the first session, we did a Bliss Foaming Face Wash. After the face wash, you want to use an exfoliator. You can obviously do an exfoliator at any time--at night or in the morning--but I suggest doing it at night. So this is from Remede Spa. Now, Remede is one of the most prominent spas that there is. There is one in the St. Regis in Aspen, there is one everywhere that you can think of, but they are very high-end. So you don't have to spend that much money on an exfoliator 'cause this is about $80 dollars. But you can get any exfoliator. You can get one at the drug store. Why we use an exfoliator is to get out all of the dead skin. Now, the face wash is just on the surface. The exfoliator takes away the dry skin that you have building up from your makeup, and, as women, we all know that we really have build-up. So now we're going to rub the exfoliator, and now I suggest doing this once a day, and if you can't get to it once a day, make sure you do at least four times a week. So we're going to rub it in--again, massaging it in. Now, this feels more like a scrub, so it has a little scratchier surface. It's a little bit harder than the face wash. And the reason being is it's getting out all that dead skin underneath. So we're going to massage that in for about 2 minutes and you'll really feel that it's deep into your pores and it's getting out all the build-up. And some of us don't wash our makeup off every single night; sometimes we forget, of course, and this is going to get that build-up out. So just massage it in. And the key to any exfoliator is keep massaging because the deeper you go, the more dead cells you'll get out. And you can also put a serum on after that. So we wipe off the exfoliator, and, again, in the upward motion; you always want to take it off. And then I have a serum, which is more of a soft kind of gel. So, again, the serum is great for you if you have extra oil that you're feeling that week or your skin is just acting up, it enhances the exfoliation. And, again, the exfoliating is really important because just a normal face wash doesn't get out all of those dead cells from the makeup, so you really want to make sure that you massage the exfoliator in for about 2-3 minutes. I would do it every night before you go to sleep, and basically what we're doing is going over a skincare program, and you should adopt a routine that you do every single day and night so you know what your skin is getting. And you should treat your skin like you treat anything in your life. You should approach it with as much heart if you care about yourself, you care about your skin, and you want to look young for the rest of your life.
