Common Causes of Writers' Block

REBECCA SATO: Hi. I'm Rebecca with ExpertVillage.com, and we were just talking about what you do if you have writer's block. Well, see, writer's block has to do with ideas. The ideas aren't coming. But sometimes, the ideas are coming but the desire isn't there, and that's different. You might know exactly what you need to do and how to do it and the thoughts might not be there but you don't feel like it, what would you do then? Because that's just a serious little problem if not even more serious. So I'll show you a couple of ways to get around that. And this usually have more to do with higher thinking up here, obviously, about the project, the writing, yourself, your family. It can have--when you don't have the desire to write, it can be a lot of different factors. So let's talk about how you can overcome that and the very least identify where that's stemming from. So first of all, realize that this is you. Okay, let's just say this little stick person is you for a moment. And where are all your ideas coming from? Where's all your passion coming from? It's coming from your friends. Let's say that here are your friends. It's coming from your family. It's coming from people you know that inspire you. Maybe you don't know them personally but you've read their works and they're great. Everybody gets their ideas and their inspiration from somewhere. And sometimes when we stop having desire to write, it's not that we don't love writing or we don't want to write anymore. It's just that that energy that we were getting from all these is getting blocked somewhere. So sometimes, if you don't feel that desire--and this is actually, I'll go as far as I say that this is true for anything in life not just writing but it definitely does pertain to your writing. This energy that you're getting to do what you love to do, it can get blocked by friends. It can get blocked by family. It can get blocked by other situations, maybe people and ideas that you come across or maybe self-defeating thoughts. At anywhere in this energy cycle that you're creating, you can get blocks. So that's something to be aware of. It's not that you blamed your family or your friends but you just need to be aware of that that people and circumstances can drain our energy and that makes us feel like we don't have energy to do the things that we love anymore. So take a look at your life and what's going on in your life and see if you can identify the big picture, and we'll talk about that more next.
