Imagination & Becoming a Professional Writer

REBECCA SATO: Hi. I'm Rebecca with ExpertVillage.com. We're going to talk about how to develop your skills as a writer. Well, first of all, what skills do you need? I would say, from my experience and in my opinion, the number one skill that a good writer needs is imagination. And the reason I say that is because you really can't write anything that you can't imagine. And the better your imagination, the better your writing is going to be. So that's something you really want to exercise. And you might say, "Well, hey, either you have it or you don't," but that's not true. I would say, probably, most children are pretty good at imagining, at dreaming, at thinking what if or why is that. And then as we get older, we kind of lose that sense of wonder. But I think to be a good writer, you have to kind of either keep that sense of wonder or you have to learn how to get it back if you've lost it. Because it's that sense of wonder that really gives you imagination. And Einstein who we all know as one of the world's greatest scientists and you think he was a very logical man who didn't care about imagination but he actually said that imagination is the most important part of science and basically anything. If you can't imagine, then you can't go anywhere, and it's the same with writing. So that's the first thing you want to focus on. And then of course, there are few other practical skills that you need as well, and we'll talk about that next.
