Dealing With Procrastination & Freelance Writing

REBECCA SATO: Hi. I'm Rebecca Sato with ExpertVillage.com. And we're going to talk about one of the big monsters that you have to vanquish as a freelance writer and that is procrastination. Procrastination can turn a job you love into a job you hate. And procrastination is something that everyone in the world, regardless of what their career or industry is, is going to have to deal with it on one level or another. But freelance writers, we really have to be careful with it because we face challenges that no one else has to face. First of all, a lot of the time we're working from home, remotely, we don't have a boss or a supervisor breathing down our necks, and we really have to be self-disciplined. And another challenge is, for a lot of the freelance writers, is that our deadlines are usually at least a few days, sometimes even a few weeks, sometimes even a few months away. And a lot of writers, I'm not going to say all, I don't want to generalize and I don't want to offend any of you freelancers that are very disciplined and very good at this. But a lot of writers tend to be the fun, spontaneous, creative type and that's kind of what draws them into writing is that they have a lot of energy and a lot of thoughts. And that same type of personality also has a chance to get you sidetracked easily, so what you really need to do is realize that you have to pace yourself and you have to have a system. You can't look at it as, well, I have two months to do this. You have to look at it as this is how much needs to be done in that two months and this cannot be done in two days. So basically, realistically, how much do I need to do every day to get to this point, and you need to make an actual timeline. Don't get into the habit of just putting it off and thinking that you'll do a rush job at the end. That doesn't work. And you're going to get a bad reputation. You're going to do sloppy work, or you're going to spend three days without being able to take time to sleep and eat. That's not fun. So learn how to overcome procrastination and learn how to schedule.
