I actually heard about someone who offered a software service he worked on for years to develop for free for a limited period of time only to get customers. Let's see it how it is, people have to offer something others don't. But in my experience some companies don't even want work for free sometimes.

How to Get Jobs as a Freelance Writer

REBECCA SATO: Hi. I'm Rebecca with ExpertVillage.com, and we're going to talk about how to develop a portfolio for a freelance writer. There are a lot of things that go into creating a good portfolio but you have to start somewhere. So first of all, you have to realize you're not always going to get a great-paying job for your very first writing assignment, especially if you don't have any samples to show for it. So I recommend, I hate to say write for free, but I would say be willing to write for a little to build your portfolio. And the ways you can do that is there's always start-up magazines. There's your local newspaper. There are--you can--a lot of things--you can find things online on places like Craigslist or just in the classifieds or people that are looking for an entry-level writer. And they know you don't have a great portfolio, but you will want to come up maybe with a few writing samples and they don't even have to anything that was published, but just so that they can see that you do know how to write. You've got good grammar, no spelling errors, and that you can write a good copy.
