Ceramics & Pottery: Rolling Clay

Hi! My name is Vincent Sansone and I am the Head of the Ceramics Department here at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park. Today for Expert Village I am going to show you how to make a slab pot over a hump mold. So, first you take a piece of clay and cut from the brick of clay and then you are going to flatten this out and try and make it about a quarter of an inch thick. You can use a rolling pin to do this, you want to be careful not to go all the way over the edge of the slab because then it makes the ends too thin and they are more susceptible to cracking. You want to keep turning the slab so that it does not stick to the wood or the canvas whatever surface you are using to roll this out on, you do not want it to stick. Okay, I have got it thin enough now that I can pick it up and stretch it by hand now.
