How Comedians Defeat Intimidation

CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. Okay. This is called "Other Comics Intimidating You." This will stop any young performer who's just starting out more than anything else. 'cause if there's someone who they respect comes off stage and blasts them and they did this quick and they stop. I mean, how dare you let anyone do that to you. I remember Brenda Butler once told me a story how she was in Houston and these guys were giving her a hard time and she said to me, "Do you know where those guys are now?" And I said, "No." And she goes, "Still there." So, you know, don't let anyone stop you. You know, what's important? This is who you listen to--the crowd. They are your critics. Not some guy who's bitter, who hasn't made it after several years, so he wants to take you down with him. You know, people always try to tear other people down to make themselves look better. Listen to your crowd; they are your critics, not other comedians.
