CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. This is all about watching other comics. Me, I tend to not watch them because I don't want their influences into my acts, so I tend not to do it. However, in the beginning, I think it's a good thing to do. Don't imitate them and don't be too influenced by them that you're lifting their stuff. What you want to do is watch how they handle themselves, how they're poised. So, go to a headliner show where some outstanding comics are on and see what they're saying and how they're making people laugh, is the poise up there? It's really a good thing to do to watch someone better than you. 'Cause when you're an open mic comic, you tend to pat yourself on the back there, "Boy, I'm really good." No, no, no. Be the best open-micer out there. Raise your standard, raise the stake, go watch someone who's outstanding and see how he or she handles himself, so--then you'll know how much work you have ahead of you. Okay? So, raise your standard and go watch someone who's really good.
