CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today, we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. Getting the light is when they light you from the back and that's how much time you have left to get off stage. They light you, you wrap it up and you're off. This is probably--well, it's an important thing for a club owner for you to do well, alright? In the beginning, you're going to be doing pre-shows, I'll explain that later. So, you're on amateur show, you're the first show, there are usually two shows after that. If you go over light and many others do, that fouls up the entire scheduling of all the club shows. So, you have to get off when you get the light. If you get a bad reputation of going over light, you'll never ever, ever, ever work that club again. So, what you do, go to the emcee and tell him, "Hey, when you give me the light, first of all, where is it? How and how much time that I have left? I would do--I will finish my joke and do one more after that." This way, that guy is not pacing back and forth disturbing your rhythm and the audience rhythm 'cause he has a job to do. If you go over, he gets heck from the owner and the manager. So, make sure he knows when exactly you're getting off. One more joke, you're going to finish that joke and then one more after that and that's it, you'll get off. Don't go over light.
