CHRIS MURPHY: Hi, on behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today, we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. How much time do you need? Five minutes, that's it. That's all you need. In fact, I think it's do--it's best to do a little bit less. Talk to the emcee before and say, "Hey, I may do less than five minutes." Make sure he's in the room, 'cause you what happens? You finish a joke, your best joke is last, you get a good laugh and then he's not in the room 'cause you did it too quickly. You're left stranded. So, make sure he's in the room. Say, "Hey, I may go less." Do less than five. That's more important, okay? So, five minutes is all you need. That's about three pages of material. I know that because I asked Seinfeld when I first started out, "Hey, how much is five minutes?" and he said, "Oh, about three pages." Well, it sounds more like Ray Romano. Anyway, but he said three pages so I'll go with him. So, write about three pages of material, do a little bit less and then make sure the emcee knows you may do less than five. That's all you need in the beginning, okay? Five minutes.
