How To Hold a Mic as a Comedian

CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. Okay. Now, even though this is called how to have a comedy career, this may seem basic, the microphone, okay? But everyone always asks me, "What do we do with the mic? Will I hold my hand away?" Don't be Roger Daltrey up here, okay? Just be calm. If you're afraid of the mic, be centered, step on it right here, go like this, counterclockwise, pull it up and then go clockwise. Simple as that. Keep it in the stand in the beginning, alright? Then when you have more confidence you can take it out. Me, I prefer to take it out of the stand right away and I go like that with a nice authority. They say, "Oh, wow! This guy has been on the stage before." So, you want to walk around with confidence, okay? So, hold it right here, do not cover your face, you're not going like that, you just have it right here so it's just--as if you're not even using a microphone. Think of an umpire in baseball. A good umpire, they don't know his name. A good mic kinda thing, you don't even know he's even using the mike.
