CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. Ah, the check spot, the biggest nightmare for any comic. This is kryptonite. This is when the crowd pays the bill and doesn't pay attention. So, how do you get around that? It's really especially bad if you have younger people in the crowd who are not used to going out in groups. You want to have a crowd that's a little bit older and has a credit card and this goes a little bit quicker. Now, what you want to do is look at the crowd, see different groups of people. If it's young girls you want to have jokes about them, how they're paying the bill. If it's older couple, a married couple, have jokes about them, how they're paying the bill. And don't waste your good bullets in the beginning. Alright? Also, have the waitress tell you a thumbs up, when she's in, when she's finished the checks then you'll know it's time to do material. Have her go like this and you're going to go, "Okay. Now I can do my jokes." Don't waste your bullets like I said. So, go in there and have jokes about how they're paying the bill before you're ready and then you do material. That's how you handle check spot.
