Open Mics for Beginning Comedians

CHRIS MURPHY: Hi. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy. I'm here at the New York Comedy Club in New York City. Today we're going to talk about how to have a career in comedy. Open mics are a necessary evil. They could be nightmares mostly because there's other comics waiting to go on, not paying attention to you and they're writing their own little notes. So, if you don't get laughs on open mic, do not worry. Also, you can get laughs on open mics that doesn't count because there's a little clique. But to use open mics effectively--well, you have to use them because I can't tell you how many times I'd ad-lib things on open mics and I still use to this day. They're a necessary evil. Anybody who's anybody started out at an open mic. I'm always asked where do I like to go on. You go on where they let you. So, what an open mic does it helps you build callouses. The more you go up, the more comfortable you feel. And like I say you'll ad-lib jokes, so you had to use them. Step number one to have a comedy career, open mics.
