Safe Book Placement for Home Library

Hi! I'm Jennifer Kimball and one behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you how to organize and maintain your book collection. One thing that's important to consider when putting your books on your shelves are safety issues. Obviously, if your books are back in the shelf it's less of a problem. If you have some that are lying on the edge, or maybe you have some facing out, this is something that you need to be concerned about. Particularly, if you have young children or pets. If you have books that are kind of placed flat on a shelf, you want to make sure that they're back far enough so someone can't come by and knock them off. If you have a small child running by and they bump the bookcase, you don't want a heavy book falling on their head. If you must lay it down, you want it far enough back. Not necessarily on top of other books, but just so that it's not hanging over the edge. Another consideration is books that are faced front on the edge of the shelf. These can also be easily knocked over particularly onto small children and pets. If you have just a shelf without the sides, you want to make sure that your books are not going to fall off of the side as well. You can either use book ends or have an object that holds it, which is something that we'll be getting into later. Regardless, you want to be sure that your books are secured on the shelves and not to fall off and hurt people.
