Making the Top Hem for Handmade Purses

Hi, I?m Melina Piroso and welcome to Expert Village. Today I?m going to show you how to make cute little bag out of regular everyday fabrics. For the next step, we're going to fold the outer bag and the inner lining together to make a hem. And we're going to take our pins and we're going to pin along the hem. Keep about a half an inch hem. Doesn't have to be a half an inch. You can decide to shorten your bag or you can keep the hem a little longer. Really depends on your own personal taste but I?m going to go ahead and follow about a half an inch off of this line. It's always always very important to pin before you sew. I know it seems like it's not a big deal and it seems like you could pop this under the sewing machine and hold it with your hand but it never comes out as good as if you pin it because the sewing machine's a pretty strong little machine and it shakes the whole table. It shakes your hand and what looks like something even usually isn't even if you don't pin it. And sometimes even if you do pin it, it's not even. So you want to try to better your odds and pin everything. But you can kind of eyeball it and make sure that both sides are even; that you don't have one side coming up higher than the next.
