Curling the Hair Tendrils for an Up-Do

LAUREN FARRAHER: My name is Lauren, and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm here to talk to you about curly hair updos that you can do at home. Now, some people do not like the feeling of having all their hair off of their face, and they do feel a little bit more secure and a little bit more confident when they have some tendrils hanging. I did pull some pieces from Ashley's updo. I'm also going to pull one from the side in order to show you the proper way of doing your tendrils. Now once we do this, she has all curl on the back, if you wanted to, I'm sure you could weave them straight, but in my opinion, it's not necessarily going to match the curly look that you already have in the back. Now, what I suggest with tendrils is to go through--remember the curls in the back, how we sprayed it with hairspray before we went through and actually did it? If you do that with these fine hairline pieces, they're going to stick and they're going to poke out. So if I go all the way up to this root, they're going to get that little lift and sometimes they look a little funny. What you want to do is pull down with your curling iron. So I'm slanting my curling iron down, almost towards the jaw and then rolling the hair. So they're going to fall a little bit flatter. After I'm done, I'm going to let it set. I'm going to use my fingers to kind of twirl it a little bit to really set that curl in, and then I'm going to spray it. That way, they're falling flatter. They're not popping out, and they're falling against the skin. So you can do the same thing over here. See how I'm keeping the hair by the root--flesh against the scalp? I'm not doing any lifts. So that way, this part is not lifting up. And then I'll spray, just to set them into place a little bit. If you need to pull them out a little bit, you can. You can turn them; you can flip them a little bit. So that way, your curl rests against your face exactly the way that you want it to.
