Ignore what Chad said about brakes. He is partially correct in that the front brake does provide 75% of the stopping power, but the back brake is used as much, if not more than the front brake throughout the course of a ride. For starters, you should be applying pressure to the rear brake ANY time you're using the front brake, mainly for control and weight balance. Second, the back brake is used to complete slow moving stops. Third, when cornering, the use of the back brake to maintain control (known as trail-braking) can easily add overall corner speed to your riding style. A slight amount of pressure on the back brake while rolling on the throttle keeps the bike from wobbling under heavy acceleration and helps prevent the back tire from "busting loose" under power. Fourth, the front brake is useless while doing wheelies; the back brake is again used for control.

Demonstration of Sport Bike Riding

Hi, my name is Chad. We’re talking about sport bikes today, and now we’re just going to go for a quick little ride. Everything looks tight, everything looks good, so the bike’s safe to ride, so I’m going to go ahead and take it out. The controls on the motorcycle are basically, you have your key, obviously. Doesn’t start the bike, you have a start switch. Your front brake, where three quarters of your braking are- most important brake- is right here on the right hand side with the throttle- gas. This side is the clutch. On your left foot will be your gear shift. The one down is first gear, then there’s a neutral but you pass through it, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. This bike has five, some have six. The rear brake is on your right side. The rear brake has very little power compared to the front brake. You use it only in certain circumstances. This is your real braking right here. So basically, what we’ll do is we’ll go ahead. The kick stands up and crank it up, kick off and go for a little ride.
