Changing the Position of Portals in Orange Box's Portal

JOHN SEXTON: Hi, I'm John Sexton on behalf of Expert Village. Today, we're going to be learning how to play Portal, a game by Valve Software, a company with which I have no affiliation. Here's the dispenser, and it just bounces back and forth in this room so we want to let it get out. We'll do that with a blue portal. And the instinct is to kind of run back and start making portals as we go, but it's important to pay attention to where your portals are placed. Let's remember where our orange portal was. It was over here, up at the top of that staircase. So what we can actually do is rather than backtracking all that way is we can just go ahead and jump through this portal ourself and change where the exit is. Instead of having it there, we can make the exit right here, above our power receptacle. And there's our power ball dispenser right into the receptacle. Great. So that's just one example of how Portal challenges you to be clever and to use the portals to navigate the levels in an efficient manner. It would have been very difficult to try to piggyback that power ball all the way back through the level using a bunch of portals. And it would have been inefficient to run back around the long way when all you have to do is just step right through the portal and it puts you where you need to go. That kind of thinking is the only way to get through some of the puzzles later in the game. And that's this test chamber, number 14.
