Using Mesh or Armor for Sport Bike Jackets

Hi, my name is Chad. I’m talking about sport bikes today and we talked a lot about gear. We’re going to talk a little bit about some street gear you can wear all the time to help protect you. We’ve already talked about helmets and gloves. There are different options in jackets these days. The technology’s come far, and I want to talk about this jacket specifically. There are various brands. This was made by a company called Joe Rocket, but there are a lot of different brands. Essentially this jacket is made up of mesh. It is a nylon material, usually, that has holes all the way through it. So when you ride, it breathes. One of the problems is that people are too hot to wear gear. They say it’s too hot, so they ride around without a jacket on. And when you fall down, your elbows and your back and parts of you get really torn up. So they came out with these jackets; it’s basically mesh. And as you ride, air goes through it and it keeps you cool. But, very importantly, within that mesh is armor. There’s pieces of armor that go over the shoulders, and all the way down to the sides with armor underneath and padding. There is armor in the elbows, there is a back protector; this is a piece of foam in this case- there’s also hard plastic ones that you can buy that will protect your spine from an impact, from getting paralyzed. And it basically allows you to wear this jacket in almost any weather. One of the accidents that can happen, and is, unfortunately, somewhat common is, when you fall down on a motorcycle, your elbow will go into the pavement. When your elbow hits that pavement, it sends a shock up your arm, in your shoulder, and will snap your collarbone. So, when you have padding like this that compresses, and you fall down, this takes all that shock and lowers it so that you don’t get as much damage and are less likely to break your collarbone. The padding up here does the same thing; keeps you from breaking bones, like shoulder bones and collar bones. And, of course, this mesh, while not as good as leather, does a pretty good job, especially with the armor underneath, of stopping abrasions. When you fall down, you don’t tear the skin off. These jackets are relatively cheap. They have ones with- this ones got soft armor- they have ones that actually have very hard armor with padding underneath. And there’s really almost no reason not to have one. They run around a hundred bucks and they will really save you a lot of pain and a lot of hospital bills when you fall down.
