Basic Acoustic Guitar Melodies

Alright, we are back and we are going to play some melodies and introduce you to some additional techniques for making melodies more interesting and fun. It will get a little old playing the same thing after awhile. Lets talk about something called a slur in music. It means to play something smoothly and when we do that on the guitar we will use a hammer on and a pull off. So, I'm not hitting two distinct notes. I'm playing the first note and I'm hammering the second one. It sounds nice and smooth. The opposite would be a pull off in which I actually pull down the string. The hammer is when I hit straight down. The pull off is when I pull off in that direction and drag my finger across the string to make the sound. If I just do a continuous hammer on and pull off this is what I get. It's a good workout for your fingers. You'll notice that I'm holding this finger down the whole time. Another popular technique is vibrato, which is just moving the note back and forth and is kind of a wobbling sound. Which is nice. That's Vibrato! We have slides. I hit the first note and I slide up to whatever note I want or slide down. One more would be a bend. A bend is a very fun little technique there. Now instead of playing two notes I'm going to play the first note and I'm going to bend up to the second note. You can use these fingers to help push the string up. Like three little guides pushing it up (not just one finger, which makes it considerably easier). You can bend farther than I just did. I bent a half step there. You can bend a whole step or two steps or whatever. That's it a little bit of technique to make your melodies a little more fun and interesting. Let's come back and play some scales and explain what they are. Be right back.
