Planting Ismene Fall Bulbs

YOLANDA VANVEEN: Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series, we're learning all about fall-blooming flower bulbs. And another one of my favorite bulbs that bloom in the fall, for me, is Ismene or Ismene. And this is just a beautiful plant that's actually from Peru. I'd like to believe that the Incas developed them long before any other cultures developed bulbs, and when the Spanish found all the gold, they actually found wonderful plants that the Incas had developed, and they brought them back to Europe and around the world for us to enjoy. So Ismene blooms usually late summer to fall. It has beautiful green foliage, and then the flower comes up with beautiful blooms that smell like lemon merengue pie. They're one of my favorite fragrances in the world. It's kind of vanilla citrus fragrance, but people describe them as lemon merengue pie. They're a little bit tender so if we have a hard winter in the Pacific Northwest, I can lose them. So I like to bring 'em in, throw 'em in a paper bag for the winter, or throw the pot in the garage to be safe. But, usually, every five out of six winters, they will survive outside, here in the Northwest. They're just a beautiful plant that's easy to care for, great in containers or the ground.
