Learn About the Minor 7th Flat 5 Root Position

MIKE LAIS: Hi. I'm Mike Lais and on behalf Expert Village, this is diminished chord voicings. Alright, so we covered the diminished 7th chords and the diminished chords. Here's a minor 7th flat 5. These chords are used as passing chords just as the diminished except they usually go up as opposed to down. Well, get to that later. First, let's look at the spelling of a root position minor 7th flat 5. We'll stick in the key of C just because we've been doing that for everything else and the way that this is going to look, see, if we have our C minor 7, it looks like this. And the only difference is, between this and the minor 7th flat 5 is exactly what it says, it's a C minor 7 with a flat 5. If this is the 5, we flat it. Just right that, right? So, we go 1, flat 3, flat 5, and then flat 7. Whereas in diminished, its' a double flatted 7th, right? Minor 7th flat 5, you have just a flat 7. So 1, flat 3, flat 5, flat 7. Okay? if you want to see that in a different key, we'll go--let's say G, we're going to go 1, flat 3, flat 5, flat 7 versus the diminished with the double flatted 7, it will sound like this. The minor 7th flat five sounds like this. That's a minor 7th flat 5, root position.
