The Beat Attack in Advanced Sabre Fencing

JASON SHERIDAN: On behalf of Expert Village, this is Jason Sheridan of Sheridan Fencing Academy here in New York City. Today, we're going to talk about advanced sabre fencing. Feint attack is an example of a compound attack, an attack with more than one part. Another example is beat attack. Again, once we know how to control distance, these actions become much easier and they're much more effective. A beat attack is an action in which you knock you opponent's blade out of the way, allowing you the moment, the brief moment to score without any worry of them being able to protect themselves with their blade. This also allows us the right to score called "right of way" by robbing our opponent according to the rules of this fight. But very important here is that I'm taking the blade away and giving myself this moment to score. Now, watch very carefully. The girls are going to be fencing each other maneuvering. One of them is looking to make beat attack. The other is just maneuvering, changing rhythm. Watch carefully. As they move, the goal is to be very relaxed and surprise the opponent with the beat to give them just a moment to hit after they have made the beat. Watch again. It'll be beat and an immediate hit, da, bah. This is very good, taking her opponent's blade out of her control for just one moment. One more time. Excellent. On behalf of Expert Village, this has been Jason Sheridan with Sheridan Fencing Academy here in New York City, and I'd like to thank you for watching.
