Using a Home Router

Let's discuss a little bit about your home networking router. So this is just the box that the router actually came in. I actually have a driver disc, which will be loaded onto your computer. In this case, it actually came with a PCI card that would be put into your laptop in case you don't have wireless built in, so this is the driver and the unit here. Let's talk a little bit about the router. So this is the router I have right now. This is just your standard router. This was actually has 4 outputs, and it is a wireless router as well. So, with this routers, pretty simple to use and pretty simple to set up. What you will do is of course you'll need your power, which this will be plugged into of course a standard outlet. This will provide power with the unit itself. The antenna, which I'll screw on as I'm talking. This is actually of course the antenna that will broadcast your wireless signal to your laptops or to your computers, however you may have it. So besides the router itself the one other thing you will need of course is a modem. The modem will come from your internet service provider, whether it be Verizon, Brighthouse or whoever you may have in your area. So from the modem, you will have your Ethernet cable. This one's actually brand new. We'll take it out of the bag though. Okay, so we got the back open. We'll just put that aside, and we actually have our standard CAT5 cable right here, which is your Ethernet cable. This cable will go from your modem to your router. So, on this particular router, it has the actual input to the side away from the actual router ports, which will be the output. So, it's very simple of course. You just lock it in, and of course it will go from your modem to this. Once, it's on all these lights will start flashing and it'll show you that you actually have a signal. So let's say you have other ones that are hardwired. Of course you won't want to unplug this when you're actually using the system, but for learning purposes, I'll just show you. So we have these 4 inputs here. So let's say we have 4 different computers that aren't going to be wireless. We will use a CAT5 or Ethernet cable in each one of these to the actual computer, wherever it may be. This way we will have a wired signal for our internet or even home networking straight to our computer. So of course, we'll take these back out, and then like I said the antenna will be for your wireless signals that will go to your laptop or PDAs or whatever you may have. So go ahead and power it up, reset it if you need to reset it. You have a little button here. You input from your modem, which your internet service provider will provide you with will plug into here. Your hardwired systems will go into here and all your wireless will be here. All your other settings will be done on your computer. That is something that you will have to read the manual for or check Expert Village for other videos on how to do that, but that's pretty much it on the basics on how to set up your home router, so go ahead and plug it in and enjoy.
