How to Do Cross Leads in the Cha Cha Dance

CHRISTINA HAGGERTY: Okay, so for our cha-cha partnering, the next step we're going to show you is the cross body lead. Now remember, we are doing cha-cha-cha, this is LA style cha-cha-cha, we're breaking on two. Okay so, the cross body lead, let's take it from a closed position, which you've already learned, but again just review. I'm putting the hand as close to center of the back as I can, keeping my elbow nice and open, creating a nice frame here. And Miriam is resting her arm on mine, her hand about where my shoulder is. And then, this hand is just open. She's placing her hand in mine. We have a little bit of energy here, a little bit of resistance, and let's go from the basic. We're going one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight and one, here's the cross body lead, three, and four, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three. That's the cross body lead. Basically, the cross body lead is a way for us to switch positions in a graceful manner, in a nice way. See, I'm standing directly in front of her, and what I do is I use, two, three, I use my two, three, Cha-cha-cha to open up. Do you see that? I'm opening up and I'm completely getting out of Miriam's path so that she can just come straight across. I bring her across in the next count, and we finish the step. It's also a way that I can go from closed position to open position. Again, so from the basic, we're going one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one. Here, I'm using my feet, three, four, and five. Notice on the cha-cha-cha, she could, if she wanted, travel across cha-cha-cha, but she didn't. I kept her there. How did I keep her there? With my left hand. I brought it across my body so that she wouldn't be able to come across. So I kept the cha-cha-cha on this side, then I bring her across on the six, seven, eight, and one. I use my right hand to guide her across, and then I let go of that hand and we end here in open position. So, again, let me show you the whole thing, we'll smooth it out. It goes like this, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four, and five. So, that's the basic cross body lead, Cha-cha-cha breaking on two.
