Basic Step with Partner in the Cha Cha Dance

CHRISTINA HAGGERTY: So this is the Cha-cha-cha lesson. We're going to start the partnering. I'm Christina Haggerty. This is Miriam [PH] Swavinzara, and we're going to start. We're going to just do the basic step first. Just face each other, so you can see how we relate to each other. Now, Miriam's going to change her step. She's actually going to be stepping back as I step forward. So it's going to look like this. We're going to step, one is still the transition, two, three, Cha-cha-cha, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one. So that's the Cha-cha-cha basic. Now, facing each other. So Cha-cha can actually be danced in closed position or open position. Here's what closed position looks like. I create a frame, the leaders create a frame with their arm, and you want to make your hand as big you can and you're going to place in the center of your partner's back. Your other hand, you're going to open the palm. She's going to place her palm in yours. She's gonna, actually, rest her left hand lightly on your shoulder and the arm contours your arm as well. So this is closed position. Now, I'm going to go into that same basic step in closed position. Looks like this, one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four and five, six, seven, eight, and one. If you notice, Miriam is doing a little bit more, some styling, she's moving a lot more, and myself being a leader, I'm actually just taking the steps. I'm doing less body movement, keeping a very nice posture. The last position we're going to show you is open position. We can, again, do the same step in what's called "open position." So again, here's our basic: One, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven, eight, and one. There you have it. That's the basic step. We showed you closed position. You can actually also dance it without holding on at all and do, you know, some Cha-cha-cha Shines as well.
