Understand How the "Y" Connectors Function

On behalf of Expert Village, Kurt Glaser, KGB Studios, Seattle. Let's continue now with our sessions on "How to Use a Two Track Reel to Reel Tape Recorder". And then, of course, nothing else would be complete in our kit without various "Y's". You have both the male and the female genders to "Y" connectors, so if you need to jump from one track to another you can add that and then you can actually get three tracks, three tracks instead of two. Those are the "Y" connectors. And we'll finish up our discussion with connectors on, you have again, RCA to quarter inch, different types of course. There are two different types, the ones that are coated or brass. Like this one is coated, and this one is just clear. And then you have your mini connector into a quarter inch, and this is actually an RCA connection into a "Y" connector as well. And then, closing up, we also have the type that is very important too, and that is the quarter inch into an RCA. If say you had a live band and you wanted three mics to record at the same time, you could put the mics into the two stereo connectors, and then you could also run a third microphone if the circuitry allows this, and mix both the line and the microphone at the same time. That wraps up our discussion on cables. As you can see there's just a ton of it. I always bring a whole bag, this is my trusty bag, full of all kinds of connectors.
