Hi, my name is Chad. I’m going to talk a little more about sport bikes. We talked about various modifications that can make a bike faster and handle a little better. But one of the most critical subjects is tires. Tires on a motorcycle are just unbelievably important. A lot of technology work is going into tires right now on the race track because as bikes get faster and faster, tire technology has to increase in order to keep the bikes running well. And that’s translated onto the street. A tire’s important because a shape- same size, but different brands- different models of the brands of the tire can be shaped differently. A more rounded square tire will cause a bike to turn a little bit slower, a more sharp tire will cause it to turn very fast and can cause some instability. There’s also compounds. A very sticky compound will make the bike stick. So you go through a corner, it sticks to the ground. But that compound will come apart very quickly and your tires won’t last long. As they heat up, they’ll more and more break down. So you have to choose your tire very carefully. You have to match it to the bike, to the specifics of the bike- how the suspension is set up- so that the bike turns the way you want it to turn. It’s stable, but yet sticks very well. There are multi-compound tires these days where the outside is softer but the center where you ride straight most of the time is hard. There are compounds that act differently depending on how heated up they are. So you just have to go through all that, figure out what you’re going to be doing with the bike- whether you’re going to be doing track days, whether you’re just going to be riding on a highway a lot- and pick a tire that fits your riding style and fits what you’re going to be doing with the bike most of the time. But it is a very critical decision; the technology is constantly changing and it’s really good to kind of do the research and talk to your local shop, and make sure you get a tire that works for you.
