How to Flip Reels on a Tape Machine

On behalf of Expert Village, Kurt Glaser, KGB Studios, Seattle. Let's continue now with our sessions on "How to use a Two Track Reel to Reel Tape Recorder". On this session what we're going to do we've got a song on the other side of the reel to reel on this two track reel to reel and we're going to have to flip things over so that we can hear it. So, the first thing we're going to do, I always turn the deck off because it takes a little bit of time, and heat is one of the major killers of electronics, so I tend to turn the deck off. Next thing I do is I loosen up the tape. As you notice, it's getting loose. Don't touch the tape! Don't touch it, don't put your fingerprints on there, that will ruin the tape. Next thing I do is I loosen the reels so that I can get the reels off. And that's the next thing I do, I then remove the reels carefully so as to not touch the tape. Obviously you have to flip the tapes over, so this tape now goes over here, and this one comes over here. Line them up there with the hub, there you go, that one's in. This one's now in over here, and then do the reverse by just popping them in, making sure they lock in place, and just make sure that the tapes are now in a place where you can lock them back down. So I lock them back down, I don't forget to do that, which is the next step. Lock them back down from the hub, and then tighten the tape up onto the reel, like so. Now, we're all set! And then, flip it back on, and we're now ready to play the music on the other side by hitting the "play" button and you'll be off and going. So that's all you need to do to flip it over. Join us next session as we continue on "How to Use a Two Track Reel to Reel Recorder".
