Healthy Snack Ideas for Kids

Hi, I'm Pam on behalf of Expert Village and today we're going to talk about eating healthy and physical activity in four and five year olds. Now snacks should make up about a quarter of the daily caloric intake. Small stomachs can't really eat a big portion at one time, so it's great to do things in small portions and then have snacks throughout the entire day. When they're active, like they should be, they need constant energy to keep them going. Now the best snacks are rich in carbs, protein, fiber, calcium, and a good mixture of vitamins. Now, kids, fruits a good thing to give them. Like we said, you want to make sure that you're getting a rainbow of fruits everyday, so you don't want to give them bananas twice a day, you want to give them say a dark purple fruit like a plum and a banana. They usually prefer raw vegetables as opposed to cooked vegetables, so if you're going to do something like carrots or cauliflower, broccoli, something like that, most of the time you're going to have a better chance of them eating it if it's raw instead of cooked. You want to give a mixture of things like creamy, like yogurt, crunchy, like crackers, something that's really bright, like a bright strawberry, and sweet, lots of fruit are sweet. Peanut butter is a great snack. Now, low sugar cereals like Cheerios or Chex are great to have, you don't want to do something like Fruit Loops or Apple Jacks. Make it fun. Take a normal snack and add food coloring to it to make it interesting. Kids are going to like that. It's fun, but it doesn't look like it's healthy. And that's some good examples of snacks.
