What is the Nutritional Pyramid for Kids?

Hi, I'm Pam on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're going to talk about eating healthy and physical activity in four and five year olds. The new food pyramid was released in 2005 to replace the old one that was originally created in 1992. You can get your own copy of the food pyramid at www.mypyramid.gov. Now, it's important to teach kids not to consider foods as good or bad, but simply that they need to make good choices and eat a variety of foods everyday. You want to make sure that you're getting something from very color everyday. Each color on the food pyramid represents a different food group, and you want to make sure that you're picking things from each one everyday. Now as you can see, the new pyramid adds stairs as a part of the pyramid. This is to remind you that it's just as important to be physically active everyday as well as eating the right foods. Now you are the greatest model for your children. If you want your children to be active, it's important for you to find something that you like to do with them. For instance, if you like to swim, sign your kids up for swim lessons. If you like to run, take them with you. They are going to follow your behavior. Now the wider the stripe, the more you want to eat from that food group. So for instance, as you can see here the orange stripe, which is the grains is the widest. So you want the majority of your food to be coming from the grain group. The oils down here, which are the yellow, you kind of want to avoid.
