How to Use Kindling to Start a Fire

Hi, I'm Bobby on behalf of Expert Village. In this series I am going to show you several different ways that you could easily light a fire within your fireplace and I am going to show you several safety techniques and things that you need to be aware of when lighting a fire in your house. Okay, so we just collected the main firewood that we are going to use in our fireplace and this is oak but we need some kindling to get started and kindling is just small pieces of wood. You want more of a soft wood because soft wood catches on fire real fast and it burns real hot for a few minutes. You don't want it to burn for a very long time especially pine because pine will cause creosote to build up in your chimney and possibly cause a fire. So I am going to use the small strips of pine and just to get the fire started and you will place those in your fireplace. You will surround your kindling with larger pieces of your main wood which is in this case oak. You just light your kindling and your fire will be up and going in a few minutes.
