Inspecting a Fireplace

Hi, I'm Bobby here on behalf of Expert Village. Everyone loves having a warm fireplace on a cold winter day. The downside of that is you have to clean the fireplace. In this series we are going to tell you how to clean the inside of your fireplace, your chimney and even repaint the inside of your fireplace to make it look new. Okay so now our fireplace is really clean; we've vacuumed it, swept it, wiped it down with a damp cloth. Before we proceed any further, we want to take an inspection of the fireplace to see if there is any cracks in it, any bricks broken, check out the mortar joints to make sure they are in good shape. This fireplace looks pretty good. There is just one little crack right there. That's not that big of a deal but if there happened to be a mortar crack right here, I would show you how to fix that here in a moment but all in all, this looks pretty good. But this is the point where you want to make sure and do a really good inspection of your fireplace. A broken brick can actually be a fire hazard if it was in the back, you want to make sure and check those out. If you can't replace that yourself, you might want to have a brick mason or someone to come in and take a look at your fireplace. This fireplace is a solid unit, it has metal behind it so I really don't have to worry about this too much. But some of your real fireplaces that have real masonry work inside, you have to really watch that. It is not very common but it is something you would want to keep an eye on.
