JASON SHERIDAN: On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Jason Sheridan for Sheridan Fencing Academy here in New York City. Today, we'll be talking about beginning sabre fencing. In the sport of fencing, there are three different weapons which are competed in the world, three different disciplines that people learn. The one we're talking about is the sabre. The other two are foil and epee, and we'll discuss those maybe at another time. Sabre is a cutting weapon and it look like so. You'll notice it's got this curved guard; it protects the hand and the arm. It's got a blade like so, although you'll notice it's not actually sharp as in a dueling weapon might be because this is for sport. It's used with the edge, making cuts with the blade like so. It can also be used to make different parries, thrusts. Many different movements can be made all with this one weapon. The idea of the sabre comes from the traditional cavalry weapon called a sabre. You'd be running on a horse, riding on a horse, pull your weapon out, say, "Charge," make cuts to your opponent, also on horse, et cetera.
