BEN GRAHAM: We're taking a look now with the pitching coach. He's very important to the game of baseball because he works on an in-depth day-to-day, play-by-play, pitch-by-pitch level with the pitching staff. The pitching staff includes all five starting pitchers as well as the entire bullpen and the closer. Now, he's gotta work with each one of these pitchers making sure that they understand their role, what their job is when they come to the game. He needs to go over the game plan with the starting pitcher making sure that they understand the scouting reports, understanding how they're going to approach each different batter because every single batter and every single pitch and every single situation in the game of baseball is entirely different. So it's really up to the pitching coach to make sure the starting pitcher knows the scouting report, knows which batters have which tendencies, what pitch is needed to be thrown at what time. He also needs to work with the bullpen making sure they understand what their roles are going to be. Sometimes a pitcher will know for a fact he's going to come in in the seventh inning or he's going to come in the eight inning, and the pitching coach is gotta make sure that he's up to par on that. Now, when the game is not being played, the pitching coach has to work with the individual pitchers working on such things as stamina, pitch selection, working on their motion and the types of pitch that they're throwing. He has to work with them on a very one-on-one basis to develop their pitching styles and make sure that they're improving and practicing and doing things the right way according to the team's approach to the game of baseball. The pitching coach also, during the game, has the responsibility of monitoring pitch counts making sure that the starting pitcher is not getting tired or talking to the pitcher and making sure he can go on. It's really up to the pitching coach to develop individual intimate relationships with the individual pitchers, so he can tell when they've had enough and when they can't go on or when they've got another batter or two in them. So the pitching coach, he gets to be the best friend of the pitching staff but he also has to manage them, make sure they're doing their jobs and make sure they understand their jobs.
