Types of Baseball Coaches

BEN GRAHAM: We're going to take a look now at the coaching staff. The coaching staff, generally, will consist of your general manager, your hitting coach and your pitching coach. For our purposes, there are some other coaches involved in practices and things like that, your fielding coach, for example, your training coach, but they're not as actively involve in the actual game itself. Generally, your general manager, your pitching coach and your hitting coach will always be in the dugout while the game is being played. And they will be passing signals into the game and they will also be coaching their various position players in different situations determining who should be doing what, when, where and how. For example, your general manager, sorry--your manager is going to be in charge of monitoring the lineup, pinch hitting, things like that. Your pitching coach monitors the pitchers and your hitting coach obviously monitors the hitters. Your first base coach and your third base coach are part of the coaching staff, and they will be actually out on the field while the team is up to bat or on offense. So we'll look at each one of those coaches in depth in our next few segments, but that's an overview of the coaching staff.
