The beauty of Barbu is the option that allows you to pick the hand that you want to play when it's your turn. Unfortunately, it's going to be the opponent's turn the other seventy five percent of the time. So, if, unfortunately, somebody calls King of hearts, and you've got two or three hearts with just the King of hearts, I mean, with the King, say, two hearts with the King and nothing else in the hand that's going to let you, because your hand's balanced, then your shafted. They're not allowed to lead hearts, fortunately, until they're heart tight in the doubling game, which we'll talk about later. It becomes a little bit more brutal but the bottom line is, when the opponent makes the call, you kind of have to hope that a.) you're not penalized with too many points in his call or b.) he might call Fan Tan or Tricks and you'll be able to feast on some of those positive points. So, it's primarily your choice. You look at your hand. You look at what's available from what you haven't selected before. The score keeper will tell you that and you make the choice of the level that you want to play. You want to make hay when you're calling the hand and you want to try to grab a few points or avoid taking points when the opponent calls the hand.
