Learn About Nullos in Barbu

Hi we're going to discuss the individual contracts in the game. We're going to have a brief overview of each contract then we're going to greater detail in the second part of the presentation. Which will be the advanced and intermediate game. The first contract is called Nullos. The term Nullos denotes negativity, where you are trying to get as few points as possible. The idea of Nullos is to try and declare a contract in which your hand has a lot of low cards and a lot of loosing cards. You don't want to declare Nullos with aces and kings. Or you don't want to declare Nullos with suits that have a concentration of cards in a short suit because then you will be forced to take tricks in these suits. One thing I will say about Nullos is that if you are getting toward the end of the game or the end of the hand and you have a throwaway hand and you want to minimize the damage of the negative points that you are going to score, then sometimes people will use Nullos as sort of a nonsese choice where they if they're going to lose on Nullos and they not only incurr a penalty of let's say five or six tricks which is 2 points a trick, 10 points, 12 points because they can make that up maybe wait for the good fan tan hand or wait for the good positive hand like tricks. So again, use Nullos as a throwaway and we will discuss that in greater detail.
