Learn the Seven Contracts in Barbu

There are seven contracts in the game. There are nellow, queens, heart king barbu, hearts, last two, tricks and fan tan. Again eighth contract is ravage city. If you have about an hour of playing time with your friends or group, hour and twenty minutes then you can play an eight hand game and use the optional contract, so that everybody, the game is symmetrical. If you choose the play the long game, it's going to take three to four hours. It's a nice afternoon of fun because everybody gets to play all seven hands. Hence it's a twenty eight hand game. It?s just around the table. Some people like to play "Okay I'll name all my hands and you'll defend". Actually this is a three on one game. It?s not a partners game. So you're really ganging up on, so it has that heart structure, and that it's a cut throat game. You're trying to aim for the person with the highest score and so forth. My preference so that game doesn't, so you?re just not sitting there, is that in hand number one, if I'm the dealer, I'll get to make the first call. Let's just say I pick queens. Well queens gets crossed off the score sheet for me, I've already used it. Then it will be John's turn, if there's a John sitting there, and he'll get to pick his choice. He may pick queens too, to get that out of the way. You choose the hand level that best suits your hand. You're certainly not going to call heart king if all you have in the hand is the king and the jack of hearts and nothing else in the side suits. Because they are just going to lead hearts and drill right out of you. So the point is, you want to pick the contract, pick the level that best suits your hand. You might want to get the dangerous hands out of the way like queens and heart kings and hearts. Because those have between them eighty four negative points. You certainly want to save tricks for a hand where you have a big old long suit, maybe seven or eight cards if you are lucky to get that. If you have the tops in that suit you might pull forty points in that hand. We are going to talk about fan tan later. Fan tan is the purest game. In my opinion, it?s certainly the most enjoyable game and the most challenging game. That's a hand you really need to have a lot of cards that are close together in sequence. We will talk about that later.
